Emoji's pros and cons
By Sam Hurlburt
Emojis have become the most popular pictures in texting history, comparable to the phrases BRB, LOL, and TTYL, but did you know they were created in the 90’s? That’s right, they were created in 1998 by Shigetaka Kurita. That means emojis are almost 20 years old! Back then there were only a few emojis like the smiley face and the heart, but now there are about 250.
My opinion is that we should only have the 15 emojis that are actually used the most. There is no need for 250 emojis. Some of them don’t even make sense. Why do we need an emoji of two girls dancing? We don’t. The two girls dancing emoji along with 100 others should not exist.
The good side of emojis is that they are convenient. Instead of texting, “I’m so happy!,” you can just text a smiley face. When you are in a hurry, using emojis can really be the quickest way to respond to someone.
However, some people think emojis are ruining language and the ability of people to communicate. I have to agree with them. A lot of my friends I see are just texting smiley faces to their parents for no reason. A lot of younger children with phones are spamming random emojis to people on their contact list. If all they do is post emojis, how will you communicate with them? People need to use words to speak to each other, not just pictures.
I personally prefer emoticons, which are the smiley faces like :). It is harder to just use them without words, and you can create your own.
Remember, this is just my opinion on emojis. You may love them and find them useful. But to me, they just seem overused and annoying.
Oh by the way, the poop emoji is actually chocolate ice cream.
